Abstract

In a marine pressurized water reactor, the core is surrounded by water contained within a safety tank which acts not only as a shield but also serves to condense any steam that should escape from the primary coolant system in the event of an accident such as a burst occurring in the system. The primary coolant has only short-life radioactivity so that contamination of the safety tank is not a serious problem but should damage occur in the reactor, by the failure of a fuel element, for instance, excessive contamination may result and additional shielding is provided for in such circumstances by a containing wall around the safety tank, the annular space between which is flooded with water by pump means in an emergency. The containing wall may be formed from locking hinged bulkheads which can be quickly swung into, and secured in, positions in which they form the wall. In this way it is not necessary for the ship to carry continually a sufficient bulk of water to provide a shield that will be effective against all eventualities.
