Collapsible trunks etc.; lids and covers; corner joints.-A collapsible barrel, cask, tub, case, trunk, &c. is made with a body consisting of staves a, Fig. 2, connected by a layer or strips b of canvas secured to their inner or outer faces, the sheet of staves being brought into the required cylindrical or other form, in which it is maintained temporarily by one or more encircling or internally-disposed bands having their ends detachably secured together; these bands may, in some cases, be subsequently removed. Rings c of wood &c. are placed on the ends of the body, and are detachably fastened together by loop members f of wire &c. connected to eyepieces let into recesses in the bevelled inner faces of the rings, the members f of one ring being connected with those of the other by lacing &c. End closures i are held against the rings or in recesses c<3> therein, and are removably or otherwise secured. In some cases, an L-ring fits in the stave ends and under that portion of the closure i coming over the ring c; or a flat ring of metal, vulcanized fibre, plywood, &c., or a disc-piece, fits in the stave ends, and the closure i may be fastened to or made integral with it. The staves may be spaced apart or may have bevelled edges touching one another, and, for a conical receptacle, may be made tapering in width. For a trunk with flat sides, the staves are connected by a backing over the whole ot their inner faces, and the end closures i, Fig. 8, fit in end-rings c forming, with side pieces l, channels to receive the stave ends; the top closure i may be hinged, as shown, to the ring c. In some cases, an outer piece similar to l is provided. The end-rings may sometimes be integral with the closure members.
