ENTER@ PATENT CFFFCE.
ISAAC NAYLOR, F LOS ANGELES, AND HENRY B. RUGGLES, OF PASADENA, CALIFORNIA.
Application iiled July 9, 1914.
Our invention relates to receptacles or containers and mor particularly to barrels,
casks, kegs, and similar vessels. The particular object of our invention is to produce a device of this character that is formed of a pulpous raw or crude waste material, properly treated, and molded or formed into the desired shape. A further object is to construct the receptacle or container in a manner so that it may be readily knocked down if desired, or if found expedient may be constructed of knocked down elements capable of being interlocked and sealed to form an integral device. Further objects are to construct a receptacle so that the same is extremely light in weight, inexpensive to manufacture, and is extremely strongin use.
These objects we prefer to accomplish by the means and in the manner hereinafter fully described and as more particularly pointed out in the claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a vertical side elevation of a cask made in accordance with our invention showing the cover elevated therefrom;
Fig. 2 is a transverse section of a fragmentary portion thereof showing a manner of interlocking the cover;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view similar to Fig. 2 of a modified manner of interlocking the chime and cover of a cask;
Fig. 4 is a vertical side elevation of a barrel showing a manner of reinforcing the sides or bulge thereof.
Referring to Fig. l of the drawing, it will be observed that our receptacle is of a barrel or cask shape and comprises a body portion 1 with the usual bellied or-bulged sides and constructed or formed in an in- Specifcation o1" Letters Patent.

tegral unit. The material used in the construction of the body and other portions of the receptacle is raw or crude fibrous material reduced to a pulpous or doughy mass. which mass is formed or molded into the shape of the finished receptacle. The upper and lower edges of the walls of the barrel are preferably iiattened into a cylinder to form modified chimes 2 over which the heads or covers 3 are adapted to be iitted. If desired, short threads l of abrupt pitch may be made on the exterior of the chimes and are adapted to fit into counterpart threads 5 formed in the outer face of a groove or recess 6 made in the under side of the heads 3 so that when the latter are placed over said chimes a short turn will lock them in position. We prefer to increase the thickness of the heads adjacent their peripheral edges as shown at 7 and before the heads are finally placed on the barrel a coating of pulpous material treated with adhesive substance is applied either in the groove 6 or upon the chime so that when the parts are dried the heads will tightly fit together and render the joint air and water tight.
In Fig. 3 is disclosed a modified cover S and chime 9 therefor wherein the short threads 10 are disposed upon the .interior surface of the chime while the cover comprises a block the edge of which is vertically disposed and provided with exterior threads l1 adapted to engage threads 10. A short angular lip or rim l2 extends around the upper corner of the head as shown so that when the head is disposed in proper position it will rest upon the upper edge of the chime as will be understood.
The fibrous material of which the receptacle is constructed possesses such properties that it is tough and has great tensile strength, yet it may be readily cut by a saw or an edged tool, and when so cut may be readily united by the application, to the edges it is desired to join, of a coating` of said material in a pulpous state and treated with adhesive substances.
It is obvious from the above that receptacles of various shapes or sizes and constructed integrally or in parts may be made 'in the manner described and We do not desire to be limited to any particular shape, size or construction.
Having thus described our invention what 5 we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A barrel having an end of cylindrical form with longitudinally projecting teeth the side edges of which are inclined to pro- 10 vide inclined recesses, said teeth being in the plane of the body of the barrel, each terminatin at the upper edge of the barrel and a heat provided with a circumferential flange having spaced teeth alternating with 15 those of' the barrel and receivable in inter- Witnesses to signature of Isaac Naylor:
