My invention relates generally to knockdown barrels and specifically to a temporary binding for the staves of a barrel while in a knocked-down condition; and it consists of the novel .construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter shown, described, and claimed.
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the staves of a barrel in a knocked-down condition and held together by a temporary binding in accordance with the principles of my invention. Fig. 2 is a nest of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of a barrel ready to be nested or in condition to receive the hoops. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view through the binding and-one of the staves, parts being broken away to economize space.
In carrying out the principles of my invention the staves of the barrel are assembled in the ordinary way, the ends of the staves being drawn tightly together as though the hoops were in position, and then the straps 5 and 6, of hoop-iron, are placed in position, one around the barrel, near the upper ends of the staves, and the other around the barrel, near the lower ends of the staves, and said straps are attached in position by means of the nails 7 and 8, inserted one through each end of each of said straps. Corresponding ends of the straps-5 and 6 are attached to the staves 9 by means of the nails 7, and the opposite ends of said straps 5 and 6 are attached to the staves 10 by means of the nails 8, thus permitting of the barrel opening on the line between the staves 9 and 10. The elasticity of the intermediate staves pressing their ends outwardly against the straps 5 and 6 and pressing against the edges of the staves 9 and 10, which are opposite the opening, will hold the intermediate staves securely in position between the staves 9 and 10, and thus'the straps 5 and 0 serve as temporary bindings to hold the staves of the barrel in position relative to each other during the handling and transportation of said staves while the barrel is in a knocked-down condition.
The different sets of staves may be nested as shown in Fig. 2, placing two or more sets in a nest, as desired, and thus a larger number of barrels may be packed in a car or other conveyance than could be packed if the barrels were in a set-up condition.
When it is desired to set the barrels up, the heads are placed in position in the creases l2 and 13, the opposing edges of the staves 9 and 10 are brought together, and the hoops are driven into position, and. the temporary bindings may or may not be removed, as desired. v
I claim- 1. As an article of manufacture, a barrel consisting of a series of staves tapered from their centers toward both ends, said staves being assembled in a circle with the edges of their centers in contact and having the edges of their ends drawn together and pieces of band-iron attached to the ends of one of said staves and extending around said staves to the stave adjacent the first-mentioned stave and attached to the last-mentioned stave as required to allow the barrel to open on its side and form a temporary binding to hold the staves in their relative position, substantially as specified.
2. In a knockdown barrel, a series of staves tapered both Ways from their centers, assembled in a circle with the edges of their centers in contact and having the edges of their ends drawn together and bands attached to the ends of one of said staves and extending horizontally around the staves to the stave adjacent the first-mentioned stave and attached to said last-mentioned stave as required to allow the barrel to open on its side and as required to hold the staves in their relative position until the barrel is set up for use, substantially as specified.
