Abstract
1,061,976. Cold compression moulding. DYNAMIT NOBEL A.G. Aug. 28, 1963 [Aug. 31, 1962], No. 34131/63. Heading B5A. Articles, e.g. cartridge cases, spur gears &c., are compression moulded from a cold compression moulded blank of thermoplastic material, e.g. polyethylene, at a temperature below its crystalline melting point, the flow of material during the moulding causing molecular orientation and consequently enhanced strength, of the material in certain regions. In one embodiment (see Figs. 1a-1c, not shown), the blank (20a) is moulded between a lower ram, an upper ram, and a die, to form a cartridge case having walls of enhanced strength, the cartridge case being ejected by further downward movement of the upper ram. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 3a-3e, not shown, a spur gear is moulded from a blank in a suitably shaped die between upper and lower movable punches, the faces of which are so shaped as to cause material to flow from the body of the blank into the teeth forming regions of the die thus forming a spur gear having teeth of enhanced strength.
