Abstract

Vinyl esters of aromatic or saturated aliphatic mono- or di-carboxylic acids are obtained by bringing a gas mixture containing 3 to 10% by volume oxygen and at least twice as much ethylene into contact with a reaction mixture containing a carboxylic acid which is liquid under the reaction conditions, palladous chloride in a molar concentration of 0.005 to 0.5, a redox system, lithium chloride in a molar concentration of 0.1 to 1.0 and at least one carboxylate which is ionized under the reaction conditions, the partial pressure of the ethylene being at least atmospheric, the water content of the liquid being at most 20% by weight and the reaction being carried out a temperature of 100 DEG to 140 DEG C. The preferred product is vinyl acetate obtained by carrying out the reaction using acetic acid as the carboxylic acid and lithium acetate as the ionized carboxylate. The redox system is preferably a cupric salt and the ethylene/oxygen-containing gas mixture may be diluted with nitrogen and/or another inert gas. It is preferred to operate the process in such a manner that an amount of acetaldehyde is formed which may be oxidized in situ or in a separate vessel to an amount of acetic acid which makes up for the quantity of acid reacted or lost.
