Abstract

1,060,569. Electric motors. GENERAL DYNAMICS CORPORATION. Sept. 8, 1964 [Sept. 10, 1963; Sept. 24, 1963], No. 36755/64. Heading H2A. [Also in Division F1] A planar-air-gap induction motor employing an eddy-current disc 45 between two wound stators, similar to that described in Specification 990,694, is used to drive a pump, and the pumped liquid passes radially through the airgaps to cool the motor. The motor may drive a separate pump impeller 13, as shown, or the motor disc may carry impeller blades 110<SP>1</SP> on its periphery (Figs. 3, 4, 5, not shown). The rotor disc is preferably non-magnetic but may be magnetic. The stator windings are protected by a potting material which also fills the slots. The stator faces may be bare, or covered with the potting material, or protected by resinous or stainless steel " cans " 60a, 60b, dished to conform to the rotor profile. Similarly, the rotor disc may be coated with resin or stainless steel, applied by dipping, plating, spraying &c., or by canning. Pumped liquid passes through cantilever bearings 73, 75 to the right-hand side of the rotor. There may be holes in wall 87. In the embodiment in which the blades are on the periphery of the motor disc, these are formed as a series of pockets 110<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 4) on each side of the disc which cause centrifugal circulation in inlet chamber 106<SP>1</SP> and so build up delivery pressure (see Division F1). Alternatively the motor may drive a pump of any sort. The winding layout described with reference to Fig. 6 (not shown) is the subject-matter of Specification 1,060,570.
