Abstract
1,060,262. Transistor amplifiers. MINISTER OF AVIATION. June 3, 1965 [June 11, 1964], No. 24342/64. Heading H3T. A transistor amplifier with reduced crossover distortion and temperature drift comprises PNP and NPN- emitter-followers Q3 and Q1 (Fig. 2) with a common input to their bases, emitter-coupled respectively to the bases of further NPN and PNP transistors Q4 and Q2 having a common emitter load R7. By including switches S1 and S2 (which may be further transistors) the amplifier may be used as a high-impedance switching circuit when all four transistors are cut off simultaneously. In this case diodes may be joined in series with the switches and also in series with the emitters of the input transistors to prevent breakdown of the emitter-base junctions when reversedbiased. Each individual transistor may be replaced by a Darlington pair. Fig. 1 (not shown) describes a transistor amplifier not forming part of the invention. This amplifier comprises an NPN emitter-follower feeding a common-emitter PNP stage, the base of the NPN and the emitter of the PNP being connected to potentiometers across the power supply. The centre tap of the latter is earthed and the NPN collector is joined to this point by a Zener diode.
