[Also in Division F1] A blood exchange apparatus has two identical pumping systems one being connected to a fresh blood reservoir and the other to a waste blood container. Each system comprises at least one pump element having a chamber therein, an inlet and an outlet conduit connecting with the chamber a valve associated with each of the conduits, and a control element operably associated with the pump element and valves. In operation, the control element is driven so as to cause the chamber of the pump element to act alternately as a suction chamber and a pressure chamber and to selectively operate the valves such that, when the chamber acts as a suction chamber, the inlet conduit is open and the outlet conduit is closed and, when the chamber acts as a pressure chamber, the inlet conduit is closed and the outlet conduit is open. As shown, a typical blood exchange apparatus has two identical pumping systems, each system having two pump elements in the form of pistons 8 and cylinders 9. The pistons of the pump elements of each system move in opposition to one another. Each pump element has a chamber 10 communicating with outlet conduits 11a and inlet conduits 11 b. Fresh blood is stored in reservoir 13 and waste blood is collected in container 14. Each piston has a rod 7 extending through a guide element 6 to slidably engage an abutment body 5, which is carried by a rotatable control element 3, whose rotational speed is adjustable. Reciprocation of the pistons is effected by movement of the abutment bodies along came path 4 on the control element, which is connected to driving means 1 via gearing 2. Each of the conduits 11a, 11b has a spring-loaded pinch valve 16 operated by a magnetic member 15, which is operably associated with a relay 17 controlled by the control element. The left-hand pumping system draws in waste blood via conduit 22 and the right-hand system pumps out fresh blood via conduit 22. Conduits 22 may be connected with a multi-channel catheter 12 or separate catheters. A safety device represented by elements 18, 19, 20, 21 may be used with the apparatus. Elements 20, 21 are associated with the apparatus such that, in the event of malfunction, they will cause an optical and acoustic alarm 18, 19 to come into operation, or will stop the apparatus working.
