Abstract

1,060,002. Boring earth &c. W. EBELING. Sept. 10, 1963 [Sept. 27, 1962; Sept. 29, 1962], No. 35615/63. Heading E1F. In boring apparatus which enters the hole bored and comprises a rigid housing carrying the tool driving and the advancing mechanisms, the housing has guide means at its front and rear ends. The housing (Figs. 1, 4, 5, not shown) comprises an electric motor 1 and reduction gear 2, and the guide means comprise rollers 11, 12 which also serve to advance the apparatus and skids 13 which are adjustable radially of the housing to guide the apparatus. The rollers are urged into contact with the wall of the borehole by springs 15 and are driven from the motor by means of a worm 17, the drive arrangement being such that the rotation of the motor may be reversed to reverse the rotation of the rollers and increase their speed for removal of the apparatus from the borehole. The drilling bit comprises outer and inner members 4, 5 arranged so that both members are rotated in opposite directions during drilling but the inner member only is rotated during removal of the apparatus from the borehole. At the commencement of the hole the apparatus is held by a tubular guide 61 and clip 63 mounted on a trolley 66 which is provided with a chute 67 for debris from the hole. In a modification (Figs. 7-11, not shown) the rollers are replaced by grippers which give the apparatus a step by step motion, and at the commencement of the borehole the outer rotary member is fitted with cutters giving an oversized hole into which the leading end of the guide is moved, the guide being mounted on an adjustable strut. A partition 40 (Fig. 6 not shown) may be fitted to the trailing end of the apparatus and sealed to the wall of the borehole, and a seal 47 may be fitted to the entry of the borehole so that scavenging air may be supplied to the bit through an opening 48, fitting 51 and axial passage 43 whilst debris is removed by a pipe 45. The drive motor may be an air motor the exhaust from which is used as scavenging air.
