Abstract
1,059,716. Spindle brakes. ZINSERTEXTILMASCHINEN G.m.b.H. Aug. 11, 1965 [Sept. 1, 1964], No. 34392/65. Heading F2E. A spindle brake wherein an integrally formed drum or disc on the spindle is engaged by external or internal shoes or by axially movable pads or a friction disc, is applied by supplying air or hydraulic fluid under pressure to a cavity which is formed partly by an annular or partannular rigid member and partly by an elastically deformable partition which is arranged to close the cavity in sealing manner. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the partition 20 is of U- section and is clamped between annular top and bottom plates 25, 8 of a housing 9, via an intermediate ring 22, the ring 22 and housing 9 being bored at 28 for the supply of fluid to the cavity thus formed, whereby the partition urges a pair of shoes 15 pivoted at (16) (Fig. 2, not shown) to the base 8 to engage drum 12 formed integrally on the spindle 10, against the force of a release spring (19) arranged between the free ends of the shoes. In Figs. 1 and (2), the partition is part-annular, but Fig. 3 (not shown) discloses a partition extending entirely around the shoe assembly. The edges of the portion may be beaded (Fig. 4, not shown) and engage in grooves in a modified ring (23) to improve sealing. Ribs on the partition may similarly engage in grooves in the top and bottom plates (25), (8). The partition may be flat (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) in which case it is clamped to the edges of the plates (25), (8) by an encircling member which can be tightened into sealing engagement with the partition and in which the fluid inlet is provided, the ring 22 being omitted. In a further embodiment (Fig. 7, not shown) pads (74), (75) arranged over part or all of the circumference of a disc (80), formed integrally on the spindle, are urged axially to engage the disc by opposed annular or part-annular fluid pressure chambers (57), (58) formed by upper and lower housing plates (55), (56), an intermediate ring (70), and partitions (60), (61) clamped at their outer edges between the plates and the ring, and clamped at their inner edges between the plates and rings (64), (65). The pads are secured to the partitions so obviating the need for return springs. The shoes in the earlier embodiments may also be secured to the partition.
