Abstract

1416122 Spot-type disc brakes SOC ANON DBA 13 Feb 1974 [8 March 1973] 06489/74 Heading F2E A disc brake comprises a caliper 32 axially slidable on two columns 16 attached to a fixed support 10 and including at least one brake actuator, e.g. 48 so as to urge on to the disc (not shown) two friction pads 50, 58, situated on opposite sides of the disc, the friction pads anchoring on the columns during braking, wherein the caliper is slidable on parts of the column surfaces facing out of the brake, and the pads are anchored on other parts of the column surfaces facing into the brake, connecting means being provided to prevent the caliper 32 from escaping radially outwards and the pads from being drawn radially inwards of the brake. As shown, each brake pad backing plate 52 or 60 has at opposite ends a concave cylindrical surface of revolution 62 subtending an angle of less than 180 degrees so that each brake pad may be introduced upwardly to bear against a part of the surface, facing radially inwardly, of the larger-diameter portion 20 of each of the two columns 16. Each column 16 is secured by a nut 28 in one arm 12 of the support plate 10 and has a smaller-diameter portion 24. The space between the arms is available to accommodate the hydraulic-actuator part 46 of the slidable caliper 32 which also has two projections 34 each having an under-surface 40 located on a part of the surface, facing radially outwardly, of a larger-diameter portion 20 of one of the columns 16. A pin 70 inserted through an outer lug 68 on the left-hand side of the caliper, then through lugs 64-one on each of backing plates 60 and 52-and finally through an inner lug 68 on the caliper, serves to hold the brake pads up and the caliper down. A noise-reducing spring 72 having its ends located beneath pin 70 is accommodated in an opening 66. As described, this arrangement is repeated on the right-hand side of the assembly. The "actuator" end of the caliper has a pair of projections 36 each having a part-cylindrical surface 44, Fig. 4, co-operating with a sleeve 38 of synthetic resilient material pushed on to the end 24 of one of the columns 16. Mutual retention for caliper and sleeve is provided by a resilient pin 76 one end of which penetrates a bore 74 communicating with surface 44, and the other end of which is located in a groove 42 in the sleeve. For dismantling, pins 76 are first withdrawn, then sleeves 38 are removed, releasing the "actuator" end of the caliper for subsequent upward movement; pins 70 are now withdrawn, after which the caliper may be removed upwardly and the brake pads downwardly. The hydraulic actuator need contain only one piston instead of the two (one only shown) of Fig. 1, and only one brake-pad-supporting pin 70 need be provided.
