Abstract
1,059,356. Hollow charges for land mines. BOLKOW G.m.b.H., and F. R. THOMANEK. Oct. 4, 1963 [Oct. 4, 1962], No. 39188/63. Heading F3A. A hollow charge (1), Fig. 1 (not shown), for use against ground vehicles, the charge being triggered off by the proximity of a target, is housed in a thin-walled tubular container 2 together with an electric ignition device 4. During transport the container also houses signal receiving means 5, the container being closed by a cover (6). Fixed to the container is a tripod mounting 11, 12, 13 by which it can be set at a height of one to one-and-a-half metres above the ground with the longitudinal axis parallel to the surface. The charge can be aligned with a target by means of a sighting device 14, 15. A conductor 10 connects the device 4 to an igniter (9). After placing the container 2 in position, the device 4 and means 5 are placed on the ground. The means 5 may comprise perforated insulating strips separating metal foils housed in tubes of insulating material, the tubes being placed parallel to the longitudinal axis of the container, so that when a vehicle moves over the tubes, the foils are pressed into contact and a circuit is closed in the device 4 and fires the igniter (9). The distance between the leads 5 is chosen to correspond with the size of the target and the charge (1) is only detonated when the target moves over both leads. The device 4 includes a safety switch and a time switch so that the charge is armed a given time after setting. Instead of the leads 5, the target may intercept a light beam arranged as in Fig. 4 (not shown), where a light source (25) is placed between a reflector (26) and a lens (27). The beam (28) issuing from the source (25) is reflected by a mirror (29) to a receiver (30) connected to the device 4. If a vehicle interrupts the beam between the mirror (29) and the receiver (30), the ignition circuit is closed as before and the charge (1) is fired. Instead of a light beam, a radar system, Fig. 5 (not shown), may be employed, the charge being fired when the radar signals are reflected by a vehicle (37). When the charge (1) is detonated a metal liner (8), fitting the forward cavity (7), collapses and forms a slug, which is said to penetrate the vehicle under attack.
