Abstract
1,059,311. Boring earth &c. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd., E. H. N. WATSON and G. H. SMITH. March 11, 1964 [April 1, 1963], No. 12784/63. Heading E1F. The suitability of materials for sealing fractures or fissures in a formation being drilled is evaluated in a cell comprising a body 11 having a wedge-shaped slot 19, the aperture of and the slope through the slot being adjustable to permit simulation of different sized fractures and fissures. One wall of the slot is formed by a bar 15 the ends of which may be moved inwardly by screws 9 and outwardly, following slackening of the screws, by springs 18.The suitability of material contained in drilling mud for plugging fractured formations is found by first removing caps 26, 41 and passing the mixture through the slot until, if the material is effective, a plug is formed. The reservoir 13 is topped up with the mixture, the cap 26 replaced and gas pressure applied through a port 29 in the cap 26. If after some time the plug is still effective a higher gas pressure is applied for a further period, and if the plug is still effective a higher hydraulic pressure is applied, the cap 41 being replaced. If the plug withstands this pressure, the pressure is removed and gas pressure is applied through a port 24 to compress the plug for a time after which the hydraulic pressure is reapplied. If the plug does not fail the material is suitable for sealing fractures of similar dimensions to those of the slot.
