Abstract

1,059,293. Refrigerating; tube supports. CARRIER CORPORATION. Feb. 24, 1964 [May 20, 1963], No. 7695/84. Headings F4H and F4S. A refrigerating machine comprises a shell divided by a partition into a condenser chamber and evaporator chamber, and tube sheets arranged in said condenser chamber, said tube sheets having portions which project through the wall of said shell. As shown, a cylindrical shell 14 is divided by an arcuate partition 16 into a condenser chamber 18 and an evaporator chamber 20, the condenser chamber containing a tube bundle 19 supported by tube sheets 22. The latter are provided with ears 21 and 21<SP>1</SP> which project through the wall of the shell 14 and are welded thereto so that the sheets 22 serve as strengthening members for the partition 16 which is under stress due to the pressure difference between chambers 18 and 20. Ear 21<SP>1</SP> projects beyond the wall of the shell to support a cooling tube 25 and is enclosed by a wall 24 defining a chamber 26 which communicates with the condenser chamber through apertures 28 and 30. Non-condensibles and entrained refrigerant vapour pass through aperture 28 into the chamber 26 where the refrigerant is condensed by tube 25 and returns to chamber 18 through aperture 30, the non- condensibles being discharged from chamber 26. Liquid refrigerant from chamber 18 passes through an aperture 31 in partition 16 and through a filter 33<SP>1</SP> into a chamber 33 containing a float valve 34 which admits the refrigerant to a duct 35 whence it passes through an opening 15 in the wall 14 to collect in a space 32 beneath a plate 37 having central apertures 37<SP>1</SP>. Refrigerant flowing upwardly through the latter is directed laterally by a member 41 and then flows with relatively high velocity upwardly through apertures 38<SP>1</SP> in a plate 38 overlying plate 37 to wet the tubes of a tube bundle 29 in the evaporator chamber. The high velocity of the refrigerant entering the latter is maintained at low load conditions by admitting high pressure gaseous refrigerant from the compressor discharge to the space 32 via a conduit 44 under the control of a valve 46. The latter may be controlled in accordance with the superheat of the refrigerant vapour leaving the tube bundle 29.
