Abstract

1,059,036. Bearings; lubricating. MACHINE TOOL INDUSTRY RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Feb. 12, 1965 [Feb. 19, 1964], No. 6873/64. Heading F2A. A compensating device for a fluid bearing comprises a two-part housing (1, 2) having a flexible diaphragm (3) with a reinforced fiat central portion (4) positioned between the parts (1 and 2). The part (1) has an inlet compartment (5) which is connected by a passage (9) to the fluid bearing and is connected to a source of pressurized fluid by a passage (7). The part (2) has an outlet compartment (6) which is connected by a passage (10) to the fluid bearing and is connected by a return-passage (17) to the source of pressurized fluid. An input regulator (8) and an output regulator (11) are provided to restrict the flow of the fluid and differential pressures are created at each side of the diaphragm (3) by the different effective areas. The pressure in the outlet compartment (6) is supplemented by a spring (15) which urges a rod (12) against the diaphragm. The rod is mounted in a sleeve (13) which is screwed into the part (2) of the housing and adjustments are made to the spring stiffness by an electro control device (14), for example. In operation, the equilibrium pressures in the inlet and outlet compartments (5 and 6) depend on the inlet and outlet resistances, which vary with the position of the diaphragm in the gap, and on the resistance between the inlet and outlet compartments, i.e. the resistance of the bearing which is connected to the inlet and outlet compartments.
