Abstract
1,058,993. Haymaking machines. B. NIEMEYER and G. NIEMEYER [trading as WESTFALISCHE STAHLPFLUGFABRIK H. NIEMEYER SÍHNE]. Aug. 4, 1964 [July 22, 1963; Oct. 2, 1963], No. 30708/64. Heading A1F. A drum-tedder, which is capable of conversion into a side-delivery rake, comprises two drum end-discs 1 mounted in a frame 2 with their aligned axes of rotation normal to the direction of travel, tine bars 3 being mounted perpendicularly to the end-discs, which are swivellable about vertical axes and are securable in an adjusted position wherein the discs extend normal to the direction of travel and the tine-bars extend oblique to the discs, the machine having means enabling it to be drawn forward by a tractor in either position. The tine-bars are universally-jointed to the discs 1, the front disc being driven from the towing tractor through a gear-box 8, belting 9 and a shaft 28 (Fig. 5) terminating in a bevel gear 29 engaging a crown-wheel 31 which drives a bevel gear 33 on the disc 1, in any position. In a modification (Fig. 6, not shown) the three gears 29, 31, 33 are replaced by a universal joint. In Fig. 3, the discs 1 are movable together with endmembers 16 of the frame which are pivoted to side-pieces 14 about hinges co-planar with the joints between the tine-bars and the discs. In this construction the frame is adjustable by a screwed crank 17, the drive being by bevel gears 20, 22, a jointed shaft 21 and belt-gearing 24. The bevel-gear 22 has two alternative input-shafts 26, 27 for use in the rectilinear and oblique positions of the frame. The tine-bars are of hollow flattened cross-section (Fig. 8, not shown) and the tines, which are backwardly curved, are attached to them by coilsprings. In a further modification (Figs. 9, 10, not shown) the end discs are connected together by a central shaft which is automatically disconnected from the discs when the latter are angled so that one disc then drives the other only through the tine-bars.
