Abstract

A pet food bone product having a rigid hard moulded structure consists of a major portion of discrete bone meal particles distributed substantially uniformily in a matrix comprising proteinaceous material, the proteinaceous material containing at least a major proportion of gelatin. The matrix may consist principally of a mixture of proteinaceous material and starch, especially cornstarch. Other ingredients include salt, egg albumen and vegetable colouring. The product may be obtained by dissolving the gelatin in boiling water, adding the remaining ingredients other than the bone meal, cooling, beating to a suitable consistency, adding and beating in the bone meal, filling into moulds, refrigerating to set the product, removing from mould and air drying.
