Abstract

1,058,324. Valves. INSTRUMENT RESEARCH LABORATORIES Ltd. Dec. 21, 1965 [Feb. 26, 1965], No. 8348/65. Heading F2V. An inflator valve for life-rafts and the like comprises a housing 12 with an integral tapered flange 11 for attachment to the raft fabric 27, the housing being closed by an anchor plate 15. Plate 15 has a central aperture 16 and a concentric ring of openings 17. Mushroom-shaped closure member 18 has a stem 21 extending through the opening 16 and surrounded by soft rubber tubing 23 to hold both a shoulder 19 and the periphery 20 of the closure head in contact with plate 15. The stem 21 may be pulled through the plate 15 by means of an extension 24, which is subsequently cut off. A captive plug 29 excludes foreign matter from the valve. All the parts, except the plate 15, may be made of resilient synthetic plastics material or rubber. The plate 15 may be metal or rigid synthetic plastics. Grooves 26 in the housing 12 help to make a gas-tight seal with an inserted inflation pump by which air is forced in through openings 17. To hold th fabric 27 away from the valve openings, spacer pads 28 are formed during moulding of the member 11, 12. In a modification, the rubber tubing 23 is replaced by a conical spring (40). The raft may be deflated by pushing the prongs of a U-shaped tool through the openings 17 to force the closure member off its seating. This tool may be plastics-coated brass wire housed, when not in use, in the closure plug.
