Abstract

The valve is of the conventional globe body type but the valve head can be held on its seat by a co-axial helical spring. The valve spindle projects through the valve body and is supported at its upper end by a diaphragm of frangible or elastic material which exerts a force overcoming the spring and keeping the valve open. A rubber cap fitting over the top of the valve body protects the diaphragm. In an emergency the rubber cover is pressed downwards, breaking the frangible diaphragm if used and so closing the valve which is kept closed by the spring. The elastic diaphragm if used is turned inside-out so that in this case the valve also remains closed.
