Abstract

Tiles are made by (1) forming a mix of, in per cent by weight, (a) ground feldspar, 5-50; (b) sodium carbonate or other substance having an analysis of more than 15% alkali metal oxide, 0.5-20; and (c) coarse-grained substance of m.p. not less than that of (a), 45-90; (2) mixing with water and shaping; (3) firing at 950-1200 DEG C.; and (4) cooling stepwise. The firing should proceed until an apparent porosity of not more than 14% results. Feldspar (a) should be an alkali metal oxide containing feldspar of the zeolite or rock glass type or other effusive volcanic glass, and should be ground finer than 100 a ; (b) may comprise, e.g., water-glass or silicofluorides of Na or K. Other permissible additives include alumina, dolomite and materials containing alkali oxide or alkaline earth oxide. (c) may be, e.g., chamotte, porcelain, basalt, granite, quartz sand or a mixture thereof, with particle size higher than 0.5 mm. If silica is used, less than 3% of additives e.g. fluorite, aluminium fluoride, sodium fluoride or metal powders are preferably included to aid conversion of quartz to crystobalite or trimidite. Pigments may be added to an amount below 5% by weight, and may be ground together with substance (a). This mixture may be applied to the surface of the shaped unfired tile by dry or wet sprinkling. Pigments include oxides of Co, Cr, Cu or Mn. The tiles are formed by pressing and placed in a tunnel kiln on a horizontal surface dusted with a substance to prevent agglomeration with the carrier, e.g. quartz, bauxite, alumina, light ash or quartzite. The tiles may have a ribbed or coarse back, and may have a smooth or coarse surface, which may be fluorescent.
