Abstract

1,058,279. Pipe couplings. SUPERFLEXIT Ltd. Dec. 22, 1965 [Dec. 30, 1964], No. 52831/64. Headings F2G and F2P. An end fitting for a helically convoluted conduit of electrically insulating material having an internal wire reinforcement at 7 and an externally wound cord of nylon or similar material has a nipple 4 designed to screw into the conduit and a tubular ferrule 5 of which the leading edge is dimpled or turned inwardly over an annular projection 10 on the nipple, the nipple being formed with annular shoulders against which the ends of the conduit and ferrule respectively abut, the ferrule gripping the conduit either directly or indirectly to secure it in position. The leading end of the nipple is tapered and it is helically grooved to receive the wire reinforcement at 7. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 7, the conduit is covered with a braided wire screen under an outer sheath of a polymer material, the former being gripped at 17 under the turned-in forward end of the nipple whilst the latter is accommodated in the outer annulus inside the ferrule. In other embodiments (Figs. 4 and 6, not shown) conduits without sheath above or without the screen and the sheath, are accommodated with a packing piece under the ferrule to replace the sheath or on a nipple with a smaller diameter shoulder at 10 assembly with a smaller sheath respectively. For assembly, one turn of the internal wire and two or-more of the external cord are first removed.
