Abstract

1,058,232. Pressure suits. MINISTER OF AVIATION. Dec. 10, 1964 [Nov. 1, 1963], No. 43245/63. Heading A3V. A pressurized suit for airmen comprises a double-walled jerkin 11 and helmet 12 with breathing compartment supplied with oxygen via a pipe 17 and an integral airpressurized, single-walled suit 10, including wrist and neck seals 14-16 and boots 13, which can be temporarily de-pressurized at will by means of a relief valve 24 and discharge valves 21 to give greater freedom of movement. During normal flight, conditioning air is supplied to the suit 10 by a pipe 19 and escapes through valves 21. On loss of cabin pressure oxygen is supplied to the jerkin and helmet and passes through a flow restriction 22 and pipe 23 to a pressure chamber in each valve 21 which closes their respective obturating members. With the valves 21 closed, air supplied by pipe 19 pressurizes the suit 10 outside the jerkin 11. If this supply fails oxygen passes from the jerkin to the suit through a valve 20. To obtain greater mobility, the wearer can, by depressing a spring loaded plunger (not shown), open a relief valve 24 which exhausts to atmosphere the oxygen supply to the discharge valves 21 which thus open to depressurize the suit 10. Release of the plunger reverses the operation. In a further embodiment, not described in detail, a sleeved double-walled jerkin has air pressurized bladders at the shoulder which can be depressurized in the same way as the suit 10.
