Abstract

1,058,124. Apparatus for laying road material. W. STEVENS. Sept. 26, 1963 [Sept. 26, 1962], No. 38056/63. Heading EIG. A self-propelled vehicle for dispensing comminuted material, such as dry cement on to a road surface, comprises a chassis 10 having a first container 17 at one end from which material is moved by at least one conveyor 21 to a second container 18 at the other end, the second container having distributing means 43 driven at adjustable predetermined speed in relation to the vehicle speed and load responsive means controlling the operation of the conveyor. The distributing means comprises a number of helical screws 46 in separate housings 43, the screws being driven by chain and sprockets 52 from a continuously variable speed drive 55 driven from the vehicle engine 12. The width of distribution can be selected by manual engagement of clutches between the sprockets 52 and screw shafts 47. Pressure sensitive switches 85, 86, on each sideof the second container control automatically. through relays, the pneumatic engagement of clutches in the drive between the engine 12 and the two conveyors 21, to maintain the level of material between high and low limits. Further pressure switches 87 provide for warning of an empty container. By adjustment of the ratio of the gear 55 a preselected constant quantity of material is delivered to the road surface irrespective of the vehicle speed. The material in the container 18 is kept agitated by a compressed air line 121.
