Abstract
1,057,858. Testing gear teeth. W. HOFLER. Nov.20, 1963 [Nov. 30, 1962], No.45772/63. Heading G1M. In a method of testing the accumulated errors of the tooth flanks of involute gears, a tester 12 having the shape of a tooth of a rack is provided which is movable substantially transversely to its longitudinal direction and is swivelled into the plane normal to the helical flank lines and is then moved along straight lines on which the tooth flanks of the gear contact with those of the other gear extending along the tooth flank while the gear is held in a fixed position, the deflections of the tester occurring within the plane normal to the flank lines and extending tangentially to the pitch circle are measured and indicated. In use, a turntable 19 mounting the tester 12 is first adjusted to the helix angle # of the gear teeth, the angle being checked by a block gauge 7 and then shifted horizontally until it engages a tooth flank 20, the horizontal adjustment being checked by block gauge 4. For determining tooth pitch and for tracing the tooth flanks the tester 12 is moved by means of knob 16 along the contingent lines 21 (see Fig. 2), errors in tooth form being detected by deviations of the measured results from an expected straight line graph. The movement of the tester 12 are preferably transmitted by electrical means to an indicating instrument.
