Abstract
1300403 Testing gear tooth profile DAVID BROWN GEAR INDUSTRIES LTD 26 Aug 1970 [29 May 1969] 27318/69 Heading G1M A helical gear of the type in which the tooth flank profile in a plane perpendicular to the gear axis is of circular arc form is supported between centres 18, 20 or an arbor 23 mounted on a slidable table 10 provided with studs 39 or a vernier scale used for setting the table on guide 11. An arm 24 fixed to a rotatable spindle 13 carries a reference mark 25 and a pillar 27 adjustably supporting a slidable housing 28. A block 30 slidably mounted within 28 for movement in a direction tangential to a circle coaxial with the spindle 13, may be adjusted and held in position by screws 31, 32, and supports a probe 33 having a pivoted or cranked tip 34. The probe is connected to an electrically actuated recorder 35 geared to the spindle 13 and provided with graph paper 37, and adjustable base projections either side of the zero mark on the scale 26 coact with a switch (not shown) on the underside of the arm and cause the stylus to record start and finish lines on the paper 37. The probe 33 and the recorder stylus may first be adjusted or zeroed by locating a setting bar 40, Fig. 2 in the position intended for the gear to be tested and arranging for the probe tip 34 to contact the bar 40 at various datum positions corresponding to the dimensions of the gear to be tested. The bar is then replaced by the test gear and the arm 24 and spindle 13 rotated to move the probe in a small circular arc over the tooth flank to produce a graph on the recorder 35. In a modification the probe may be rotated through 180 degrees and displaced laterally through a distance equal to twice the radius of curvature of the tooth flank in order that both flanks of a tooth can be tested without inverting the gear. In a further modification the gear is mounted on the arm 24 and the probe 33 on the table 10.
