Abstract

A device for grooving fold lines in tube blanks comprises two pairs of mating grooving discs 3, 7; 4, 8 between which the tube is fed by discs 2, 6, the grooving discs being formed with annular grooves 9, 10, 11, 12 engaged by rollers 13 carried on arms 14, 15 secured to shafts 16, 17, 18, 19, the shafts 18, 19 running through the shafts 16, 17. The grooving discs are mounted on shafts 1, 5 rotated in synchronism with a cam acting on a roller on an arm 33 secured to a spindle 29, so that during a grooving operation the spindle 29 is rotated and through oppositelythreaded screw engagement with yokes 21, 24 carrying the shafts 16-19 causes the pairs of discs to be moved gradually towards each other, thereby compensating for distortion of the material of the tube to produce straight grooves. The pairs of discs are individually adjustable by rotating knurled rings 27, and are also initially adjustable towards or away from each other by rotating a hand wheel 32. In another form, Fig. 4 (not shown), the axial movement of the interengaging portions of the discs is caused by using helical tool portions (55, 56, 57, 58) radially split and connected to tool carrier portions (43, 44, 45, 46) by varying numbers of interposed disc springs. For forming one groove in the blank, a single pair of discs as shown in Fig. 4 is used and the adjustment mechanism omitted.
