A tool holder suitable for thread forming rollers, comprises spaced arm portions, each housing a pin on which is mounted a roller, and adjusting means for moving the pins towards and away from each other. Knurling, embossing, or burnishing rolls may be used. Between plates 40 and 42 (Fig. 2, not shown) of a tool holder 10 are housed freely rotatable thread rollers 30 and 32, a spacer block between the plates having curved recesses 54 and 56 suitable for housing rollers of varying sizes. The mounting pin 34 of roller 30 is housed in bushings 60 each of which can be turned through 180 degrees to give a second position of the roller 30 relative to a workpiece W. Screws 86 and 87 co-operate with flats on the pin 34 to hold it securely. The pin 36 of roller 32 is housed in slots 96 and 98 of the plates 42 and 40 and is continuously adjustable in the slots by screws 108, 110, 112 and 114. The rollers are positively geared together by means of gears 150, 152 and 154 which are housed in recesses in the plate 42. Limited relative movement between the gears 120 and 122 and their respective pins is possible since the hubs of each gear are provided with radial lugs which can move circumferentially in correspoding slots (Fig. 6, not shown). Strips 142, however, bias the gears into engagement with the roller hubs during thread rolling.
