Abstract

Olefinic terpolymers, vulcanizable with sulphur, constituted by polymeric chains derived from the poly-addition of two a -mono-olefins with a non-conjugated linear 2-alkyl-alkadiene free from the respective homopolymers, are prepared by reacting the monomers in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a compound of a transition metal of Group IV or V of the Mendeleef Periodic Table and a simple or substituted aluminium hydride, soluble in aromatic hydrocarbons. A number of suitable mono- and diolefins are specified; those exemplified are ethylene, propylene and 2-methyl pentadiene-1,4. The aluminium hydrides may be complexed with Lewis bases. The catalysts exemplified are HCl2Al.O(C2H5)2, H2AlN (CH3)2, H3AlN(CH3)3, or AlHBrN(CH3)2 with VCl4 or TiCl4. Polymerization is effected in n-heptan or toluene solution, is terminated with ethanol and the polymer is coagulated with a mixture of ethanol, acetone and hydrochloric acid. The polymers are vulcanized using conventional methods and agents.
