Abstract

The hydrogenation of a gasoline obtained by thermal cracking at above 593 DEG C. to hydrogenate all gum-forming constituents and a proportion of the mono-olefins but not aromatics is effected in the presence of a supported nickel catalyst (present in major proportion as elemental nickel) at conditions in the range 1,000-3,000 p.s.i.g., 50-200 DEG C. and 0.1-5 v./v./hr. which effect a hydrogen consumption of at least 300 SCF/B. The catalyst may contain 1-50% nickel on chalk, alumina, silica gel, kieselguhr or sepiolite and may be presulphided (Specifications 972,245 and 979,307). The hydrogen addition rate may be 350-5,000 SCF/B and consumption 400-900 SCF/B.
