Abstract

A process of isomerizing a hydrocarbon is effected in the presence of silica having hydrogen atoms in surface hydroxyl groups which are capable of ionizing and exchanging when treated with an ionic solution of a salt of a Group III metal such that the latter are incorporated into the surface of the silica in an amount of 0.01 to 3%. Typical reaction conditions are 50-600 DEG C., L.H.S.V. 0.1 to 20 v./v./hour and use of a diluent, e.g. nitrogen. The feedstock contains hydrocarbons having less than 20 C, preferably 4 to 6 per molecule, e.g. 3:3 dimethyl butene-1, 4-methyl pentene-1 and butene-2.ALSO:Silica having hydrogen atoms in surface hydroxyl groups capable of ionizing and exchanging, is treated with an ionic solution of a salt of a Group III metal such that ions of the latter are incorporated into the surface of the silica in an amount of 0.01 to 3%. The silica may be prepared conventionally and may have a surface area greater than 200 sq. m./gm. In an example, tetra-ethyl O-silicate is hydroylised and the resulting gel roasted at 550 DEG C. Al2(SO4)3 solution is allowed to percolate through a bed of such silica and any excess removed by washing. The resulting catalyst contains 1.35% Al.ALSO:Silica having hydrogen atoms in surface hydroxyl groups capable of ionising and exchanging is treated with an ionic solution of a salt of a Group III metal such that the latter are incorporated on to the surface of the silica in an amount of 0.01 to 3%. The silica may be prepared conventionally and may have a surface area greater than 200 sq. m/gm. In an example tetra-ethyl o-silicate is hydrolysed and the resulting gel roasted at 550 DEG C. Al2(SO4)3 solution is allowed to percolate through a bed of such silica and any excess removed by washing. The resulting catalyst contains 1.35% Al.
