Abstract

An ester of an ethylenically unsaturated primary alcohol is obtained by oxidizing an a -olefin having at least three carbon atoms in the molecule with a palladium salt and esterifying the a -olefin with a carboxylic acid and salt thereof in the presence of ions of potassium, rubidium or caesium and a polar solvent at room temperature to 140 DEG C. The palladium salt may be the chloride or a salt of the carboxylic acid used. The alkali metal salt may be a salt of the carboxylic acid used or it may be used in the form of the oxide, carbonate or phosphate. An oxidant capable of reacting by an oxidation-reduction mechanism (e.g. CuCl2, FeCl3 or quinone) may also be present.
