Abstract

A process for polymerizing a lactam in the presence of the salt of a lactam with a base strong enough to convert the lactam to its iminium salt is characterized by using as cocatalyst a 2-substituted-methylene-3-substituted - oxazolidine - 4:5 - dione of the formula <FORM:1056836/C3/1> 1:1:3:3 - tetramethyl - cyclobutanedione or 2:2:4 - trimethyl - 3 - hydroxy - 3 - pentanoic acid, b -lactone, where R11, R21 and R31 are alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl radicals of up to 20 carbon atoms and where R11 and R21 may form, together with the double-bonded carbon atom to which they are attached, a cycloalkylene radical. Specified lactams are pyrrolidone, piperidone, 2- and g -caprolactam, enantholactam, caprylolactam, laurolactam and mixtures thereof. Specified catalysts are the alkali and alkaline earth metals and basic derivatives thereof, many being exemplified. Many catalysts are specified.
