Abstract
A method of making a polyamide comprises polymerizing a lactam in the presence of a basic catalyst and (as co-catalyst) a compound of the formula R-CO-B, where R is an organic radical comprising a heterocyclic ring containing two double bonds and attached to the rest of the molecule by a ring nitrogen atom as shown by the formula <FORM:1037348/C3/1> and where B is -NR1R2 or -(A)x-CO-R1, where R1 and R2 are hydrogen atoms or aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aryl radicals, A is a bivalent acyclic, alicyclic or aromatic radical, x is 0 or 1 and R1 is organic radical R, many suitable co-catalysts being specified. Specified catalysts are the alkali and alkaline earth metals and basic derivatives thereof, e.g. sodium, potassium, lithium, magnesium, calcium and strontium hydroxide, lithium and sodium hydride, sodium methoxide, sodium methyl, sodium ethyl, sodium phenyl, sodium naphthyl and sodamide. Specified lactams are pyrrolidone, piperidone, e -caprolactam, enantholactam, caprylolactam and mixtures thereof.
