Abstract

Copolymers comprise open chain units of caprolactam and caprolactone. They may be random copolymers, preferably containing up to 20% lactone units or block copolymers preferably containing up to 40% lactone units. The random copolymers may be obtained by heating a mixture of caprolactam and caprolactone using water or nylon 66 salt as catalyst and the block copolymers by using a polycaprolactam oligomer as initiator for polymerization of caprolactone. In the example, a copolymer containing 18% lactone units is obtained by heating 1604 parts lactam, 406 parts lactone, 43 parts nylon salt and 126 parts water under nitrogen in an autoclave.
