Abstract

1,056,343. Cupping. WURTTEMBERGISCHE METALLWARENFABRIK. July 12, 1963 [July 17, 1962], No. 27772/63. Heading B3Q. An apparatus for the high energy forming of metal workpieces by using explosive charges comprises a water filled concrete tank 1, an annular die holder assembly 3 suspended therein in the centre of which is suspended an explosive charge 6 electrically detonated throughalead 8. A common ring conduit 10 is connected to a vacuum pump 11. The holder assembly 3 comprises a holding ring 12 (Fig. 3, not shown) having an octagonal internal form against which are slidably mounted a plurality of interlocking dies 14 each having a die space 15, a recess for locating workpieces 18 and workpiece holding means comprising a tongued sliding block 19, a soft iron ring 19<SP>1</SP> co-operating with a ring magnet 22 (Fig. 6, not shown) or a ring co-operating with 0-seals 23 (Fig. 7, not shown) the space between which is evacuated by bores 25, 26 connected to the vacuum circuit. The spaces 15 may be connected individually to the vacuum pump. In a modification two casing halves 27, 28 (Fig. 8, not shown) together contain nine single dies 30 and a filling plug 31. Filler plugs having various size access bores 32 may be used dependent upon the energy source and transfer medium used.
