Abstract

The non-circular, preferably square cross-section stem 5 of a detachable top-lift 4 is received in a matching cavity 6 in the lower end of a socket member 7 which is slidable in a heel and urged upwardly by a spring 11, the lower end 71 of the socket member being slotted lengthwise (8) and having a non-circular, preferably square, cross-section which gradually increases in size towards the tread part 4, and engaging in the lower mouth portion 12 of the hole in the heel which is of corresponding shape and taper. The heel may be formed, for example, of wood or plastics material, and the socket member may engage in a bore in the heel or in a metallic member 2 attached to the heel and having a tubular extension 3 which extends through the entire heel. Spring 11 is arranged between member 2 and a nut 9 detachably secured to socket member 7. The assembly is lowered for replacing the top lift by pressing downwardly on nut 9. Stem 5 may be roughened or have transverse corrugations.
