Abstract

1,056,050. Binding and covering. GEORGE PULMAN & SONS Ltd. Aug. 5, 1965 [May 6. 1964], No. 18898/64. Heading B3E. [Also in Divisions B5 and B6] A machine for binding sheets 41 together by means of a rim 42, usually of metal such as tin plate, comprises a table 2 and a spaced support surface 9 upon which the sheets with a U-shaped rim 42 are placed with the rim abutting a stop surface 19, a folding blade 15 which is moved downwardly, Fig. 2c, to bend the rim around the sheets, and a clamping member 6 which is moved towards the vertical face 4 of the table 2 as the blade 15 rises so as to compress the rim, Fig. 2d (not shown). The clamping member 6 is pivoted at 7 and is pressed against a screw 12 by a spring 11 so that normally it is parallel to the vertical face 4 of the table. The support surface 9 is constituted by the upper surface of the member S. A pivoted member 14 carries the blade 15 and has a cam surface 17 which, when the blade 15 is raised beyond its rest position, Fig. 2a, as described below, after performing a bending operation, causes the member 6 to be moved anticlockwise to compress the rim. As shown, an arm 25 is fixed to the blade support 14 and is pivoted at 24 to a cylinder 21. A piston-rod 23 carries two pistons which move in the cylinder 21 and another cylinder 22 respectively, the cylinder 22 being pivoted at its lower end 26 to a fixed part 27 which may be on the vertical face 4. The cylinders 21, 22 have strokes of 2 and 5 inches respectively. When a control valve 34 is operated, valves 32, 33 are actuated so that compressed air is supplied below the pistons in both cylinders thus causing an upward movement of pivot 24 of 3 inches and a working stroke of the blade 15. At the end of this movement a projection 37 on the cylinder 21 actuates a valve 35 so as to cause reversal of valve 33 so that the piston in cylinder 22 is moved back to its lower original position and pivot 24 moves downwardly 5 inches. Thus the blade 15 is moved upwardly beyond its rest position and the member 6 is cammed towards the surface 4 to compress the rim. At the end of this operation, the projection 37 actuates a valve 36 which causes valve 32 and cylinder 21 to be restored to their original positions so that the machine is ready for another cycle of operations. Instead of the pneumatically-operated device 21 ... 23, a member operated mechanically or electrically to assume three lengths may be employed.
