Abstract

[Also in Divisions E1 and F4] Extensible sheet material is so formed as to have edges 2, Fig. 1, bounding oblique-angled parallelogram surfaces 3 which are inclined relative to the general plane 4 of the material. The surfaces 3 may be formed by rhombs having acute and obtuse angles meeting at corners 5 and 6, respectively. When tension is exerted in direction X, the panel shortens in direction Y, the distance between the planes containing the corners 5, 6 respectively, remaining substantially the same. The surfaces 3 may be formed by rhomboids with two acute and two obtuse angles meeting at each upper and lower corner of the sheet which then, expands in directions X and Y when subjected to tension in direction X. A rigid sheet which may be used as a supporting structure and extends to the same amount per unit length in both directions X and Y has parallelogram surfaces with non-parallel sides of very different lengths the angles of the parallelogram being 60 degrees and 120 degrees and the angle between the parallelogram surface and the general plane of the material being 45 degrees. In Fig. 6, extensible panels 15, 16 formed of rhomboids 19 of equal size are connected to each other at right-angles by equilateral triangles 17 and by a seam 18 which cannot be forced out of position by compression in direction Y. In a further modification, the seam is eliminated by the provision of a strip 20 (Figs. 7 and 8, not shown). The sheets may be made by pressing, drawing or rolling or by making thin depressions and subsequently telescoping the sheet to produce the folds which may be slightly rounded instead of sharp. The sheets may be connected to flat articles by a transitional zone in which the parallelogram surfaces gradually become smaller. The casing behind the tube wall of a steam generator having superatmospheric pressure in the combustion chamber may be lined with the material, mineral wool being provided in the space behind the material and thin anti-radiation sheeting in the space between it and the tube wall.
