Abstract

A traverse mechanism for thread or the like cross winding machines the stroke of which may be displaced and/or varied in length comprises (Fig. 1, not shown) a double arm rocking lever 7 which is adjustably pivotally supported on a pin 10 mounted on a movable supporting lever 11 the lever 7 being adapted to receive a rocking motion from a rotatable cam drum 1. The lever 7 is formed, at its ends, with guideways 6, 12 carrying sliders 5, 13 which are constrained to move parallel to the drum axis by means of further guides 9, 14 having sliding piston members 8, 15 respectively. The upper sliding member 15 is connected to a push rod 16 adapted to traverse a thread guide (not shown). The lower slider 5 has a pin 4 which engages the cam groove. The lever 11 is pivotally mounted on a pin 17 supported by a frame 18 which is itself mounted pivotally on a pin 19. Thus the pivot pin 10 of the lever 7 may be moved in either of the directions A and B. Reciprocatory motion in the direction A may be imposed upon the rocking lever by means of a rotatable control shaft 20 driving ecentric bushes 24, 25 which are mounted in a connecting rod 23 connected to the upper end of the lever 11. Movement in the direction B may be imparted to the frame 18 and thus also to the lever 11 by rotating a spindle 34 which engages a spindle nut 33 supported from the frame 18. Drive in either direction is transmitted to the spindle 34 through a ratchet clutch 43a and through one or other of bevel gears 35, 36 to a bevel gear 37 mounted on the spindle. In an alternative arrangement the direction of rotation of spindle 34 is controlled by electro-magnetic clutches mounted in place of the ratchet clutch and by microswitches mounted on a slide arrangement attached to the shaft 17, (Figs. 8, 11 and 12, not shown). The cam drum may be driven at variable or periodically changing speed.
