Abstract

1,055,484. Endless chain excavators. GEORGE WIMPEY & CO. Ltd. and A. C. SCOTT. July 20, 1965 [July 20, 1964], No. 29414/64. Heading E1F. An endless chain excavator for digging trenches comprises a tractor 10 having an extensible support formed by a jib post 25 mounted thereon by means of a double acting hydraulic ram 16 on each side of the tractor body, the post having guides 26 on opposite sides for an endless cutter chain 22, and a pump 29 delivering thixotropic binding material, e.g. bentonite, from a reservoir 30 on the tractor through a pipe 31 into the trench. An upper portion of the post carries a support 17 for the cutter chain pulleys 18, 19 and a chain drive motor 21 and to which support the rams are attached. Further stretches of chain and sections of jib post are introduced by removal of links of the chain and upward extension of the support 17. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) a jib post may be formed from pipe sections, the lowermost of which carries a nose jib encircled by a cutter chain and in Fig. 6 (not shown) the nose jib has fixed to it two ram cylinders at right angles to one another.
