Abstract

A gasket 9 for a pipe coupling comprises a corrugated sheet metal ring having end portions 24 parallel to the axis of the ring, the corrugations comprising at least two ridges 25 extending radially outwardly beyond the end portions and at least one V-section groove 26 separating the ridges and lying radially inwardly of them but radially outwardly of a cylindrical plane containing the end portions. The gasket is housed in notches 4 in the pipe flanges 3 with its ends 24 tightly and sealingly engaged in slots 5 in the flanges. The slots 5 are preferably tapered to provide a wedging action with the rectangular section ends 24 which sealingly engages the walls 30 and 32 of the slot. Alternatively, the ends 24 may be tapered and the walls 30 and 32 made parallel to each other. Preferably at least the ends 24 of the gasket are coated with a soft amalgam. In a modification, Fig. 6, a spreader in the form of a split ring 6 which may be corrugated, Fig. 8 (not shown), and has pressure equalizing holes 8 therein is inserted between the ends 24. In a further modification, Fig. 10, the gasket is surrounded by a split metal back-up ring 40 that engages recesses in the flanges 3 and has two circumferentially opposite slots 41 therein to facilitate removal of the ring 40 complete with the gasket 9 and spreader 6 from the flanges 3. The pipes are coupled together by a clamp 14 which it is stated may be of the bi-metallic type described in Specification 805,676.
