Abstract

1,055,280. Speed governors. AKTIESELSKABET BURMEISTER & WAIN'S MASHN - O G SKIBSBYGGERI. Dec. 30, 1963 [Jan.11, 1963 ], No. 51212/63. Heading G3B. [Also in Division F1] A control system for marine engine plants having a plurality of internal combustion engines 11, 12, Fig.1, each of which is connected to an input shaft 15, 16 of a common gear 17 through a releasable clutch 13,14, the output shaft 18 of the gear driving a variable pitch propeller, comprises a selector member 23 for rendering one or more of the engines inoperative and a manoeuvring member 22 for adjusting the power output of the plant, the manoeuvring member being connected to the governor inputs 33, 34, Fig. 2, through a transmission whose mechanical advantage is determined by the position of the selector member 23. The input shafts 33, 34 determining the speed settings of the governors, are coupled to a common shaft 49 by torsion couplings 50 and are separately connected by cables 24, 26 Fig. 8 to the ends of levers 86 having followers 85 engaged by slots 84 in cam discs 83 operated through a shaft 73 from the selector member 23; initial movement in one direction of the selector member starts one engine while initial rotation in the opposite direction starts the other. Continued rotation in either direction, however, causes both engines to be operative. Bevel gears 90, 91, a shaft 92, a cam 93, Fig.7, and a linkage 96, 98, 81 shift a pin 80 in a slot 79 of a bell-crank lever 76 forming part of the transmission between the manoeuvring member 22 and the governor input shafts 33, 34 so that the latter receive only half the adjustment when both engines are running. The link 81 is connected by a cable 26 and a lever 48 to the shaft 49 and by the lever 76 and a cam 74 to a shaft 72 on which the manoeuvring member 22 is mounted. A valve 64 controlling a servomotor 19 for altering the pitch of the propeller is connected by a lever 56 to a shaft 52 coupled by dogs 54 to the governor output shafts 35, 36 and by a lever 59 to the cable 25 and hence the shaft 49 while a switch 112 operated by the edge of the cam 74 causes pitch reversal. The shafts 72, 73 carry discs 101, 102 with pawls 106 and notched rims which interengage to prevent the selector handle 23 from rendering one or both engines inoperative before the manoeuvring handle 22 has been returned to idling position. Whether one or both engines are running, the handle 22 can be moved freely to regulate speed, the rim of the disc 101 passing through a notch 105. When the handle 22 is in the position corresponding to half output of the plant, a notch 104 is opposite the periphery of the disc 102 to permit the selector member 23 to be turned to start the second engine.
