Abstract

PURPOSE: To widen the range of application of the lock-up and thereby save the fuel cost by a method wherein the lock-up is made applicable to every speed-change stage, the torque-converter condition is applied in the area where the effect of speed-change gearing by the torque converter is in force so as to prevent the fall of the performance of the driving force, while the lock-up condition is applied in the area where the above effect is not effected, and the above lock-up control is applied to each speed-change stage.
CONSTITUTION: The speed-change gearing is conducted by determining a speed-change stage to be applied on the basis of the 1st index of the rotational speed of the output axis of a torque converter or the rotational speed corresponding thereto, the 2nd index of the opening degree of an engine throttle valve or the quantity showing the operational condition of an engine or the like, and the 3rd index of the shift lever position and the speed-change stage, etc. When the 1st and 2nd indexes are in a predetermined area of lock-up operation in each of two or more speed-change stages, the torque converter is locked up, while the lock-up is released when the indexes are out of the area. Under such controlling conditions, the lock-up is made released when an accelerator is released or when the opening degree of the throttle is at such a level as possibly be regarded that the accelerator is released.
