Polymer dispersions are made by polymerizing an acrylic or methacrylic ester of an alcohol containing more than 4 carbon atoms, optionally in the presence of an acrylic or methacrylic ester of a C 1 -C 3 alcohol, in aqueous emulsion containing dispersed preformed polyvinyl acetate and a water-dispersible cellulose derivative as a protective colloid, e.g. a hydroxyalkyl or carboxylalkyl cellulose or a hydroxyalkyl carboxyalkyl cellulose. The polymerization may be initiated by compounds such as persulphates, hydrogen peroxide, azodiisobutyronitrile, cyanovaleric acid and tert.-butyl hydroperoxide. The examples describe polymerizing mixtures of methyl methacrylate and n-octyl or iso-octyl methacrylate in aqueous dispersions of polyvinyl acetate containing carboxymethyl or hydroxyethyl cellulose. The resulting dispersions are free from large particles of polymer.
