Abstract

1,054,594. Dispersing pigments in a polyolefin. HERCULES Inc. April 2, 1965 [Oct. 16, 1964], No. 14202/65. Addition to 991,584. Heading C3P. A pigment dispersion in a polyolefin is made by preparing an aqueous dispersion of the pigment in the presence of a water-soluble or water-dispersible anionic surfactant, mixing this aqueous dispersion with a solution of low molecular weight polyolefin in an organic solvent therefor and with sufficient water to dilute the pigment dispersion to such a degree that adequate fluidity is thereafter maintained, adding to the mixture a precipitant which reacts with the surfactant to convert it to a polyolefinsoluble or dispersible water-insoluble form, drying the mixture and subjecting the resulting product to high shear, powdered high molecular weight polyolefin being added to the mixture, prior to drying, in an amount sufficient to bring the pigment content to a desired level. The polyolefin may be polypropylene or low- or high-density polyethylene. The anionic surfactant may be sodium lauryl sulphate, dioctyl sodium sulphosuccinate or the triethanolamine salt of n-acylated polypeptide sodium lauryl sarcosinate and triethanolammonium lauryl sulphate. The precipitant may be a watersoluble or water-dispersible cationing surfactant and may be a primary, secondary or tertiary amine or substituted amine or a quaternary ammonium compound, an imidazoline, e.g. 1 - (2 - hydroxyethyl - 2 - n - heptadecanyl - 2 - imidazoline, oxazoline, an alkyl -substituted oxazoline or a polyethoxylated amine of formula where R is an organic radical of 12 to 20 carbon atoms and x and y are integers whose sum is from 2 to about 7.
