Abstract

1,053,842. Recording cathode-ray tube displays. T.R.W. Inc. Sept. 9, 1963 [Sept. 20, 1962], No. 35533/63. Heading H4T. In order to prevent damage to the phosphor of a cathode-ray tube 10, which is operated at a high beam intensity in order to provide adequate exposure of a photo-sensitive film 24, the film is secured (by a vacuum system 28, 30) to a baseplate 36 which is subjected to a circular motion by means of motor 42 which operates through an eccentric drive 38 and the cathode-ray beam is subjected to a corresponding circular scan by means of a sine/cosine resolver 46 which is driven from base-plate 26 and provides X and Y voltages for the tube deflection plates 12, 14. The invention may be incorporated in a display and recording system in which the cathode-ray tube is caused to trace out alpha-numeric and other symbols at selected positions under the control of a known system 56. The velocity of the corresponding circular deflections is large compared with that of the symbol deflections whereby a spot on the film is exposed for a substantially longer interval than a spot on the tube screen. The trace, position selection and circular scan signals are combined in summing amplifiers 52, 54. The dimension of the circular scan preferably exceeds the height of the symbols. The tube phosphor produces ultraviolet light; the face plate is formed of optical fibres 22.
