Abstract

1,053,804. Centrifugal separators. DIESELMOTORENWERK SCHONEBECK VEB. March 20, 1964, No. 11907/64. Heading B2P. In a centrifugal clarifier for treating I.C. engine lubrating oil and having a rotor 1 driven by jets of the oil being treated issuing from nozzles carried by the rotor which is supported on a vertically or inclinely disposed shaft 2 by means of bushes 6, 7, oil passing through a gap 10 between the shaft 2 and the upper bush 7, or through longitudinal slots (not shown) in the bush 7 is utilized to effect a floating axial mounting of the rotor. In its position of rest, Fig. 1, the rotor bears by means of a thrust bearing plate 15 on the end face of the shaft 2. In operation, the oil from the engine is fed through a bore 3 in the shaft and passes through radial bores 4 into a cavity 5 from which the major part of the oil passes through bores 8 into the clarifying chamber 9 of the rotor. The remainder of the oil flows through the gaps between the bushes and the shaft 2. A small portion of the oil flowing through the gap 10 (or through the longitudinal slots when present in bush 7) escapes through one radial bores 12 in the bush 7 but the major portion enters between the end of the shaft 2 and the plate 15 and causes a build up of pressure in a gap 11, Fig. 2, thereby causing lifting of the rotor 1. Further oil entering space 11 escapes more freely through the bore or bores 12 which have become uncovered so that the rotor is maintained in a floating position. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown). the bearing plate 7 is integral with the upper bush.
