Abstract

In subaqueous boring apparatus comprising a tool supported at the lower end of a flexible tube which at its upper end passes over a pulley to a winding device, a substantially constant force is exerted by a fluid actuated jack or jacks on the upper part of the tube to ensure constant drilling pressure in spite of the vertical movement of the drilling vessel. Jacks 5, 6 (Fig. 4, not shown) supplied by a pneumatic accumulator 9 have their rams connected to the spindle D of the pulley, the spindle running on a vertical guide 10. In modifications vertical or inclined jacks are used separately and the lower end of the tube passes between guide pulleys on the vessel. The pneumatic accumulator may be replaced by oleo-pneumatic accumulators in parallel and having different working pressures.
