Abstract

1,053,048. Filters. G. HIRS. March 3, 1964. No. 8846/64. Heading B1D. When a filter medium 30, held in position between two fluid conducting shells 11 and 12 by an inflatable seal 16, becomes clogged, the rise in pressure of the unfiltered liquid within shell 11 causes valves to cut off liquid supply through canduit 38, and to introduce gas under pressure through line 45 into the shell 11 to force residual liquid through the filter medium and out through outlet 40. The seal 16 is then vented to atmosphere and an electric motor 47 is energized to advance chains 25, connected by brackets to the medium 30, about sprockets 23 and so pass the medium beneath a cleaning conduit 33 where steam under pressure blows residue off medium into pan 36. When the medium has completely traversed the conduit 33, the motor is reversed and the medium 30 returned back to its original position, and the seal 16 re-inflated. The medium which is supported on supports 15, may be a fine mesh screen with a deposit of filter acid such as Fullers earth on its horizontal upper surface.
